Cybersecurity is the new era where equality will exist to allow intelligence to succeed.
Technology can be considered one of the most influential and creative inventions of the human mind. As technology has penetrated significantly in society, its potency and interference are a matter of strategic discussion. Though as human beings we are adaptive, we firmly stand revolutionary with a constant hunger of gaining more. Pages of history are soaked with the blood of martyrs, and as of in this century we are heading towards the bloodless war that is ‘ cyberwarfare’.
Cyberspace is an intangible dimension that is highly vulnerable to threats and risks. Cyberwarfare can be technically defined as the socially, politically, or ideologically inspired actions taken by nations or organizations, exclusively using technology, computer networks, and the internet as key weapons to disrupt and destroy the target nation or organization. War often is outlined as an aggressive phenomenon over a long period, and till now in such no established cyberwar has occurred around the globe.
CYBERSPACE AND INTERNATIONAL POLITICS
If we give an eye to the current global scenario diplomatically, there is a huge transition and continuous rise of power in different countries. Sooner, the world will face a paradigm shift of power in international diplomacy. China is aggressively rising and expanding its power making the USA insecure. The recent scenario of the Taliban in Afghanistan has edged a new concern. Conflict with North Korea has been always a matter of worry. And the most critical one is the surge in global terrorism. In all these situations technology can act as a double-edged sword for society. As all countries are technologically progressing, cyberspace can act as a new battleground.
MOTIVATION AND TECHNIQUE
Often the key motivations behind these kinds of activities are political, social, and ideological. Many a time these cyber operations are conducted for financial gain and trespassing. Many countries are advocating for the militarization of cyberspace which may result in cyberwar in the future.
There are numerous ways in which cyber operations could take place:
An attack could take place on the physical infrastructure of any nation.
Can gain access to the computer system and network.
Can trespass the security and disrupt military and defense infrastructure.
Drone technology can be hacked for ill motive attacks
Financial sectors, banking, payments, and all economic activities are technology dependent which poses a high risk of cyber operation on large scale.
The rapid diffusion of technology in the healthcare sector makes it prone to threats and risks.
There may be an attempt to obtain healthcare records of any country.
Even a pacemaker can be hacked today which can be a death endeavor against any individual.
Many cyberweapons like malware, trojan ware, spyware, virus, etc could be installed to hamper the system.
Many often power grids are also attacked by a nation which results in huge losses.
The utilization of IoT gadgets is quickly expanding among individuals which makes them inclined to cyber attacks as IoT devices could be easily manipulated.
The USA and the CYBER WARFARE
The United States is a pioneering country that strategically affects every nation in the world. The US has always used cyberspace as a pro-active defense management system of the nation. The country has handsomely invested in digital infrastructure in recent years and never stood off from using cyberspace as part of its military and strategic planning.
The recent announcement by President Joe Biden to invest robustly in cyber security reflects their promptness and vigilance.
There are several instances in the past which project the Capability of the US to carry a cyberwar.
- United states promptly used cyberattacks while dealing with Afghanistan.
- President Obama planted cyber weapons in Russian infrastructure in response to their interference in the 2016 presidential elections.
NORTH KOREA AND CYBER WARFARE
North Korea’s interference and significance are rising in the cyber world. In 2014 President Obama ordered intense cyberwarfare against the country in response to their missile test launches. Later on, sanctions were put on the country by the USA and UN.
Even though North Korea indulges itself in a variety of cyber-attacks and illicit activities through it. The country invests a hefty amount in training hackers and building cyberinfrastructure. Reportedly China has been alleged of supporting North Korea in this. All these facts are a matter of concern.
Underlining the current scenario and activities of the world, cybersecurity plays a signature role. Although there is a doubt and discussion over the actual definition of ‘cyberwar’ or ‘cyberwarfare’, the need of the hour is building a cyber workforce, and the significance of cyberliteracy also can’t be ignored. Cybercounter intelligence should be build up to test, regulate, penetrate in the matter related to security beyond the borders of countries. The world needs to be united to bring cyber peace-keeping policy to safeguard the security of their nations and the interests of their citizens. There should be a constant endeavor to establish peace.
