Nigerian Army X Account Targeted in Second Military Cyber Breach

The Nigerian Army has reported an attempted unauthorised access to its official X account, marking the second reported cyber incident involving a Nigerian military social media account in about two weeks.

The account began posting memecoin-related content on Saturday before the Army identified the activity as a cybersecurity incident.

The Army confirmed that it had detected the attempted unauthorised access and immediately activated technical and security measures to protect the account and prevent further access.

Officials urged the public and media organisations to ignore any suspicious, misleading or unverified posts appearing on the affected account until full administrative control is restored.

The incident comes around two weeks after Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters reported that its official X account had also been compromised in a cyberattack.

The repeated incidents have raised concerns about the cybersecurity of official military communication platforms, which are increasingly used to share important security and public information.

The Army has advised the public to verify military-related information through its other official communication channels while the investigation and account recovery process continue.
